I am starting my blog to record my challenges and accomplishments starting my Paleo lifestyle. I just moved to Florida, started a new career and am looking for a lifestyle change that can keep up with my busy life. I’ve tried it all, however. I just can’t stick to it and it doesn’t make me feel any better for a long period of time. I hope you stick with my blog and watch me as a I change. 🙂
I’ve always been overweight and suffer from a condition that makes me have issues controlling my blood sugar. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18 years old. As an 18-year-old freshman, I didn’t t care about what to do to make this condition better. I was prescribed Metformin to control my blood sugar and not given any directions on managing my care. Nor caring and being a typical freshman… Too much drinking and loving that a meal swipe consisted of an endless amount of food…. made me very ill. Without any doctor consultation on the side-effects of the Metformin, I became very sick with every food I ate. Imodium became my best friend. I had no clue why this was happening…or how to change it. However, I lost 20 pounds as a side effect of the Metformin.
That was the first time I’ve ever felt that I could be a normal weight.
However, I lost weight without changing a single thing. Yes, a single thing. Except I was miserable. I had lost weight and was sick all the time. Since I had naturally lost weight, I began to keep eating the way a freshman did… without any health concerns. I quickly put back on the weight. However, I was still miserable. I couldn’t go out to eat without fearing that there wouldn’t be a bathroom close enough. I wouldn’t get into the details… but let’s just say I was pretty sneaky with how quickly I could use the bathroom. 😉
Four years later, I’ve gained back the weight and stop taking the Metformin. However, I still am experiencing some of the side-effects. I’ve been off the Metformin for about a year now. I still worry when I eat but it’s just become part of my lifestyle.
I just moved to South Florida and during my last GYN appointment, my doctor pointed out that I have gained almost 20 pounds since last year… THAT MADE ME WANT TO CRY. I’m an adult now and I need to make a change. I thought about weight watchers… but it’s not for me. Even though it has opened my eyes to portions and healthy… I will never be OK that a plain bagel from Dukin’ Donuts has LESS points than a whole wheat one… YUCK! In my eyes, that means eat the plain, white flour bagel that has 0 nutritional value because that 1 point I can maybe bank and use towards Coldstone later. Can you see the cycle?
Luckily, I’ve always been interested in nutrition. Like I recently discovered that whole wheat flour has only a SLIGHT benefit over white flour. Here I am loving whole wheat pasta and NADA? Ok, I digress. The real reason I’m writing this is because…
I realized that I might have an intolerance to gluten and the Metformin either intensified this or started at the same time.
I began reading about the Paleo lifestyle and I think it’s something that really. makes. sense. Our bodies aren’t made to accommodate the mass amounts of sugar, carbohydrates and fatty oils that the standard American diet includes. We are meant to eat lean protein and get our fat an carbohydrates from sustainable choices.

Here I am… I have vowed to start my lifestyle September 1, 2012. I’m looking forward to kicking my addiction to sugar and carbohydrates and actually nurishing my body the way it was made.
